Golf Course Mechanic - White Pines Golf Club

The Golf Course Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all golf course equipment for the 36 hole White Pines Golf Club & Banquets. This includes but is not limited to mowers, maintenance carts, tractors, and golf course service vehicle. Cantigny Golf, part of the Chicago-based Robert R. McCormick Foundation and located on the former Wheaton (IL) estate of Robert R. Position Summary:
The Assistant Superintendent will: Work closely with the Director of Agronomy on the planning and implementing of the budget, operating plans, as well as train and supervise the staff, Assist the Director of Agronomy and other Assistants in managing both Cantigny Golf, and the Cantigny Youth Links, and will be involved in all activities related to the care and maintenance of the entire 36-hole facility and its equipment.

The assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course greens, tees, fairways, and the entire property of Conway Farms Golf Club; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.


  • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment.
  • Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; and supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline.
  • May modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
  • Attending educational seminars and industry trade shows to keep up with current best practices and help bring new ideas back to the club.
  • Any miscellaneous tasks assigned by the superintendent.

Employment standards

  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
  • Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; prepare clear and concise reports; and maintain effective employee and public relations.
  • Self-motivated, independent thinker with a positive team-focused attitude

Founded in 1900 the Geneva Golf Club (GGC) is the oldest nine-hole golf course in the state of Illinois. GGC is a privately owned club and operated by its members. This position, which will report jointly to the GGC Grounds and Green Committee and Head Superintendent, is responsible for golf course maintenance including;  greens, fairways, tee boxes, rough, sand traps, trees, pathways, garden areas, irrigation system, and fertilizer/pesticide application. Additional responsibilities include working with the Head Superintendent to hire, supervise, train and monitor the performance of the maintenance staff. The Assistant Superintendent will also be responsible for care of maintenance equipment, assist in the monitoring and preparation of the annual budget and participate in special projects as required.


Desire at least three years golf course maintenance experience.Two-year turf grass degree preferred.Possess required fertilizer and pesticide application licenses.Demonstrated ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to maximize course playability and beautification.Awareness of state labor and safety laws, develop complete understanding shortly after employment.Experience at a private club is desired.
